Are we slaves to christianity?

i have been thinking about religion recently in terms of how society obeys religion and compare religion today as to religion back in the 1600s. back then christians we most likely Protestant, evangelicals or puritans. these christians we all about obeying god and having no sense of individuality. to me these people lived liked numbers. in society back then you were born by the word of the bible and died by the bible meaning you would obey god to receive your reward vut in my opinion this would mean every person is the same, there is no outcast. it seems like people look different but inside mentally they are the same person.. my main point here is are we slaves to religion and does it promote anti individualism. after all if you don't obey god you will be burned and tortured for all eternity. i am glad the 2000s arent like that, sure we have the fire and brimstone christians but it doesn't rule humanity like it once did. so what do you think do i need to rebel or obey god
