Can you murder someone who is already dead?

Not that weird and it comes up from time to time, although not as you described it. In order to get a murder conviction, the prosecutor must prove that the victim was alive and that the homicidal act of the defendant caused the death of the victim. If the victim dies from some other cause, then at most there is attemped murder. In some places, not even that.
