What happened to normal Republicans?

I am talking about Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon-style moderate Republicans, not the crackpot populist Tea Party-style Republicans. John McCain is pretty much what I am talking about, but of course, most of the extreme conservatives rallied against him in 2008 and either voted for some weird third party candidate or refused to vote at all.
